Inverness Cup History A now defunct Highland whisky firm originally donated the Inverness Cup trophy in 1895. The competition was intended to be played for by the four Inverness clubs Thistle, Caley, Clach and Citadel and was administered by a representative from each of the clubs with the President of the Highland League acting as chairman. With the introduction of the Highland League Cup in 1946/47, and an increase in League membership to 14 clubs, the Inverness Cup competition took a back seat. Since 1895 the competition has not been played for on 19 occasions and once (1960) it was started but not completed. Various efforts were made during the late sixties and early seventies to revive the tournament as a floodlit competition, but they were hampered by the small number of clubs with floodlights at the time. In 1970-71 the competition was played with Thistle being beaten 4-2 by Elgin City in the final but the following year the competition went into ‘cold storage’ again with the inauguration of a sponsored trophy, the Bell’s Cup. The competition was eventually successfully revived in 1975/76 and has been played for annually since.
