Qualifying Cup 1988-89 Inverness Thistle's last victory in the Qualifying Cup came in season 1988-89. In the first round Thistle received a bye and then were handed an away tie at Fort William in the 2nd round. A 6-0 victory at Claggan Park was rewarded with a third round home tie against Huntly which was safely navigated with a comfortable 3-0 win. In the semi-final Thistle were drawn at home against Elgin City scoring 6 goals for the second time and grabbing a place in the final with a 6-2 win. In the final Thistle were to play Caley who had overcome Forres Mechanics 5-0 in a semi-final replay. As was customary with any northern final featuring two Inverness teams the game would be played at the ground of the third Inverness team. Due to the unavailability of Clachnacuddin's Grant Street Park it was decided that the club's would toss a coin for the right to have home advantage in the cup final. Thistle won and so the final was played at Kingsmills Park on Saturday November 12th. The game ended 1-1 so a replay was scheduled for the following Saturday at Telford Street Park. With home advantage Caley were strong favourites as they had already beaten Thistle earlier that season at Telford Street Park 5-2 in the Inverness Cup semi-final. On the day it was Thistle who were the better side and they ran out 3-0 winners to win the trophy for the eighth and last time.
